Summary of project:
Climate change is one of the global issues that directly affects the environment in all its forms (land - water - air) and its natural resources, whether renewable or non-renewable. It also affects human health, whether directly through the inability to withstand severe climate change or through Changing living environments in favor of disease-causing organisms. Climate change is an urgent global challenge that requires immediate attention and concerted efforts to mitigate its harmful effects. Therefore, all countries of the world paid great attention to this issue, and the major countries agreed to develop strategic and methodological plans and policies to reduce this disaster. Egypt is one of the countries that pays great attention to this issue and strives to reduce the risks resulting from it, whether in its 2030 development plan or the plan to confront climate change and its effects by 2050.
Egypt and the African continent in general are considered among the regions most vulnerable to the risks of climate change, with dire consequences on ecosystems, economies, and human well-being, despite its weak contribution to causing global climate change compared to other countries. Therefore, this project aims to create an operational atlas of the main impacts of climate change on the African continent and compare the current environmental situation with the previous 30-40 years. In addition to monitoring the most important and dangerous challenges facing the continent, whether currently or in the future, in the presence and continued rise in global temperatures (according to the scenarios set by the United Nations in its sixth climate change report), relying on ground observation data and advanced numerical models.
The goal of the project is to develop a complete vision of the effects and consequences of climate change in different regions of the African continent and to determine the priority of the challenges that must be dealt with and overcome in the entire region, based on open source data and data from the climate station of the Environmental Studies Division of the National Authority for Remote Sensing and Space Sciences.
The atlas produced by this project is considered a cornerstone and a database through which an integrated road map can be developed for the African continent as a whole. Each African country can also rely on it and use it to prepare its national plan to confront the effects of climate change and prepare adaptation scenarios and enhance resilience in accordance with the nature of the environment, its shape and level. The objective of the project:
The primary objective of this project is to create an operational atlas that provides comprehensive insights into the current and future impacts of climate change on the African continent through the use of advanced Earth observation data and advanced predictive models.
Study the effects of climate change on the African continent, by evaluating a wide range of sectors such as agriculture, water resources, human health, and social and economic systems.
Provide forecasts up to 2100, taking into account different climate change scenarios and projections based on the results.
Establish close collaborative relationships with regional and national institutions, climate experts, research organizations and local communities by actively engaging key stakeholders in all stages of the development process.
Promote knowledge sharing, capacity building and ownership, thus creating a truly impactful and sustainable resource for climate change adaptation in Africa.
